Lesson 2 of 4

Lesson 2

Asking your first question

In the last lesson, you opened up the AI for the first time. Now we are going to do the most important thing of all — actually ask it something.

The big idea

You do not need special words. Talk to the AI the same way you would ask a patient friend for help.

  1. Find the typing box

When you open ChatGPT, look for the white box near the bottom of the screen. It will say something like “Ask anything” or “Message ChatGPT.” That box is where you type. Click on it once, and you can start typing.

  2. Type your question in plain words

Pretend you are asking a helpful neighbour. Full sentences are welcome. You do not need to be clever or use special computer words. Here is the one thing that makes a real difference: add a little detail about what you want.

    Vague

    “Tell me about podcasts.”

You’ll get a long, general answer that might not help.

    Clear

“Can you explain what a podcast is, in simple words?”

You’ll get a friendly, easy answer that fits exactly what you asked.

The second one tells the AI HOW you want the answer. That small addition is the whole secret.

  3. If you don’t understand, just say so

You can talk back. There is no penalty for asking again, and the AI never gets tired or impatient. Try copying one of these:

    • Could you say that again, but simpler?
    • Can you give me an example?
    • That was too long — can you make it shorter?

We’re using ChatGPT here because it’s the most well-known. The very same way of asking works with other helpers like Claude or Gemini, so nothing you learn here goes to waste.

A friendly reminder

The AI sometimes makes mistakes — even when it sounds very sure of itself. For anything important, like health, money, or legal matters, always check with a real person you trust.

Your turn

Try it with Iris

Reading is good. Doing is better. Practice with Iris now — she will wait patiently while you type. There is no pressure, and nothing you type can break anything.
