Lesson 1 of 4

Lesson 1

What is AI, really?

You have probably heard the words “AI” or “artificial intelligence” on the news, from your family, or from friends. It can sound complicated, or even a little worrying. Let us clear that up. By the end of this short lesson, you will understand what AI is — and why it is nothing to be afraid of.

The big idea

Think of AI as a very fast, very well-read assistant who is always happy to help — and who never gets tired or impatient with your questions.

A simple way to picture it

Imagine you had a friend who had read almost every book, article, and recipe ever written. You could ask this friend anything — “How do I remove a coffee stain?” or “What should I cook for six people?” — and they would answer right away, in plain words, as many times as you needed.

That is what AI is like. You type a question, and it answers. That is the whole idea. It is a tool, like a calculator or a telephone. A helpful one. Nothing more mysterious than that.

What AI is NOT

  • It is not alive, and it is not thinking about you.

When you close it, it is not sitting there waiting. It only does something when you ask it to.

  • It is not secretly watching you.

It cannot see through your camera or listen through your phone. It only knows what you type to it.

  • It is not always right.

AI can sound very confident and still be wrong. We will talk more about this — for now, just know you should double-check anything important.

  • It will not break if you make a mistake.

You cannot damage it. There is no wrong button. If you type something odd, the worst that happens is a strange answer, and you simply try again.

Why this is worth your time

People your age are using AI every day to do real, useful things:

  • Writing letters and emails when the words are hard to find
  • Understanding confusing letters from the government or insurance company
  • Getting recipe ideas from whatever is in the fridge
  • Keeping in touch with family who speak another language
  • Having something explained patiently, without feeling rushed

You do not need to become an expert. You just need to be comfortable asking. That is what these lessons will help you do.

A friendly reminder

AI is a helpful tool, but it is not a doctor, a lawyer, or a banker. For anything serious about your health, money, or legal matters, always check with a real person you trust.

Your turn

Say hello to Iris

There is no homework for this lesson — just a friendly hello. Say hi to Iris and ask her anything you like. It could be “What can you help me with?” or “What is the weather like for gardening?” Whatever you are curious about. There is no wrong thing to say.
